Srikakulam



Srikakulam District is the extreme Northeastern District of Andhra Pradesh situated within the geographic co-ordinates of 18�-20� and 19�-10� of Northern latitude and 83�-50� and 84�-50� of Eastern longitude. The District is skirted to a distance by Kandivalasagedda, Vamsadhara and Bahuda at certain stretches of their courses white a line of heights of the great Eastern Ghats run from North East. Vizianagaram District flanks in the south and west while Orissa bounds it on the north and Bay of Bengal on the East .The total area of the District is 5837 Sq. Kms. It has a population of 2537593 persons according to the 2001 census.

Vizianagaram District flanks in the south and west while Orissa bounds it on the north and Bay of Bengal on the East .The total area of the District is 5837 Sq. Kms. It has a population of 2537593 persons according to the 2001 census. The District derived its name from Srikakulam its headquarters town. Srikakulam District was carved out in 1950 by bifurcating it from Visakhapatnam District, it remained unaffected in its territorial jurisdiction for quite some time. But in November, 1969 the District lost 63 Villages from Saluru Taluk and 44 Villages from Bobbili Taluk on account of their transfer to the then newly constituted Gajapathinagaram Taluk of Visakhapatnam District. Again in May, 1979, the District had undergone major territorial changes on account of the formation of new District with head quarters at Vizianagaram which involved transfer of Salur, Bobbili, Parvathipuram and Cheepurupalli Taluks to the new District.

RIVERS:
Important Rivers: Nagavali, Vamsadhara, , Mahendratanaya, Champavathi, Bahuda and Kumbikotagedda

The rivers have origin in the Eatsren Ghats of Orissa state and joins Bay Of Bengal within the
seacoast of Srikakulam district. The District has a seacoast of 193 Kms.
CLIMATE AND RAINFALL:

Throughout the year, the climate is characterised by humidity. The South-West-monsoon
which follows the summer season lasts upto to September. Northeast monsoon starts from 1st
October to the end of November. The period from December to mid February enjoys generally a fine
weather. The annual rainfall is 937.6 mm during the year 2004-2005 against normal rainfall is
1162 mm.
FLORA

The forests in the District exhibit a variety of local changes in quality, composition
and density. The forests are of varying types greatly differing in nature, intermixed, and
interrupted by superior or inferior types. These show, much diversity in representation and
combination of the main species. The forests can be broadly classified as follows:

1. The South Indian Moist deciduous which includes mixed forests,sal forests and hilly
Savannahs.

2. The South � Indian dry ever-green miscellaneous forests.

FAUNA

The land fauna in Srikakulam District is very little. In the past, the District must
have been the sort of several wild animals. Human habitation and the indiscriminate destruction
of forests resulted in the disappearance of the many species. Among the carnivore the tiger is
almost extinct, but leopard, hyena and wolf are occasionally seen in the forests. The Jackal
fox, wild cats and dogs are other carnivorous animals found in the District. The herbivorous
class is represented by the somber and spotted deer or chital, while wild goat, bears are the
other common once. The black buck, the blue bull and the bison are conspicuously absent in these
parts. Among the birds, the peafowl, Peacock, Jungle fowl, Pigeon, parrot, Myna partridges,
goose doves etc,., are common.

 


District Profile : Demographic Details

2001 CENSUS: 
As per 2001 Census. The population of Srikaulam District is 2537593. Of the population
the male population is 1260020 while the female population is 1277573 the decennial growth rate
from 1991 to 2001 is 9.33 Percent for the District as against 14.44 percent for the State, and
it is significantly lower than the state average regarding Sex-ratio in the state. The
density of population for the District is 435 persons per Sq.Km as against the State average of
277. The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe population of the District is 229609 and 151249
respectively. This forms 9.05 percent and 5.96 percent respectively in the total population of
the District as per 2001 census. There are 731778 male literates and 485881 female literates.
The literacy rate is 67.19 percent among males and 43.68 percent among female population of the
District. The urban population in the District is 278659 which works out to 11 percent of the
total population as against 27.35 percent for the state.

There are 6 urban units in Srikakulam District. Out of these, 4 are Municipalities and

 Place of Interest : Tourism
1. Srikakulam: 
Srikakulam is the head-quaraters of the District. It is located on the left bank
of river Nagavali. Srikakulam was formerly known as � Chicacole�. Being the head quaraters of
the District this place is connected by road to all important places in the District. Train
facilities are available from Amadalavalasa at a distance of 13 Kms. There is one famous mosque
known as Jamia Masjid . Two important temples viz. Sri Koteswara Swamy Temple and Sri
Kodanda Ramaswamy Temple are located in this town.

It is situated at a distance of 25 Kms, fromSrikakulam.
It is an important coastal village. Dargha Shariff(Tomb of religious persons)
Shaik Madeena Acquiline is situated at this place. Once it was a minor port
and some Europeon merchants resided during East India Company regime.
There is one light house functioning here focusing to a distance of 23Kms.
The river vamsadhara joins the Bay of Bengal in this village.
7. Kaviti:
Kaviti village is located at a distance of 130 Kms.
from District head quarters in between two towns Viz Sompeta and
Ichapuram, towards East. The area constituting Kaviti Mandal is
populary known as Uddanam (Udyanavanam). The coastal belt at this
place presents a pleasant appearance, covered with large extents of
Coconut, Cashewnut, Jack and other fruit trees. The Uddanam area is a
scenic spot for the visitors. Two famous temples Chintamani Ammavaru
and Sri Sitharamaswamy temple are situated in this Village.
8. Baruva:
Baruva in Sompeta Mandal is situated at a distance of
109 Kms from Srikakulam town. The famous Sri Kotilingeswara Swamy and
Janardhana Swamy temple are located at this place. Further, there is
a coconut nursery and a Coir Industry located here. The river Mahendra
Tanaya Merges into sea at this place. Thousands of people take
seabath during festivals. Baruva was once an important seaport. Two
obelisks, one of black and the other of white, of fifty feet height
above the sea level, mark the seaport. Large grown up Coconut Trees
and the green paddy fields make the place picturesque

Rajam is situated at a distance of 40 Kms. from Srikakulam town.
The place has nostalgic association with Tandra Paparayudu, the
valiant Sardar of Bobbili.
12. Ponduru:
Ponduru is situated at a distance of 21 Kms. from Srikakulam
town. The village is famous for the production of fine quality of
Khadi which is popular through out India.
13. Sangam:
Sangham is in Vangara Mandal, it is 56 Kms. from
Srikakulam. Here three rivers viz. Nagavali, Suvarnamukhi and
Vegavathi merge together. The Sangameswara temple located here
is one of the five linga kshetras, thousands of people congregate
here on Mahasivaratri
